About Chabad Romano Centre

Inspired by the outreach vision of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shneerson, Rabbi Mendel and Toby Bernstein moved from New York to Thornhill, Ontario in 1991. They began their work at the main Chabad Centre at 770 Chabad Gate.

In 1997, they became aware that there are many Jewish families living in Richmond Hill. They moved their young family to Richmond Hill to open a satellite community and Chabad Centre.  They began in the basement of their home, where the shul and Gan Shalom preschool got started. Eventually they rented a storefront in the local shopping plaza for all their events, activities, services and clubs.

After quickly outgrowing that space, the Bernstein’s began to search for a more suitable home for long term growth for the community. A wonderful series of events occurred, resulting in the Divinely providential meeting with an Italian philanthropist, Mr. Mario Romano. He gifted Chabad of Richmond Hill with a piece of land that was soon to be developed.

In 2006, Rabbi Shlomo and Ella Vorovitch joined the Chabad Romano family, to assist with Bar Mitzvahs, run the Hebrew School, and spearhead youth programming.

Chabad Romano Centre was completed in January 2009, proudly situated on the corner of Bathurst St. and Lady Delores Blvd. A beautiful expansion, in 2019, allowed Chabad Romano to expand its many programs, including 4 more preschool classrooms, more outdoor play space, and more space for shul services and life cycle events.

Come visit us when you have a chance! Looking forward to seeing you in person.
